Itelco Launches COFDM Transmitter Components for U.S. Market:

Move Likely to Re-Ignite Debate Over Digital TV Standards

March 13, 2000 - Westminster, Colorado In a move that is certain to have an impact on the debate between 8VSB and COFDM, Itelco today announced the launch of the industry's first COFDM exciter modulator for the North American market.

"Itelco does not take sides in the controversy over 8VSB versus COFDM currently raging in the United States," said Howard McClure, Vice President for North America at Itelco. "This product release is intended to meet the requirements of our customers, not to endorse COFDM modulation for an American digital TV standard."

Despite the company's neutrality, availability of the new COFDM exciter modulator in the United States is likely to stir controversy, since it will now be possible for the first time to test the 8VSB and COFDM systems together. Itelco can provide an automatic changeover unit that will allow switching between 8VSB and COFDM exciter modulators via remote control for field testing.

The new exciter modulator is the latest in a complete line of COFDM transmitters from Itelco offered in power levels from 1 W to 100 kW. The 6-MHz system for North America is a scaled-down version of Itelco's European 7- and 8-MHz DVB-T exciters which are in use throughout Europe and in other world regions. The COFDM unit occupies 7 inches of rack space and is interchangeable with the DTV exciter.

A pioneer in digital transmission, Itelco now produces transmission systems for DAB, DTV, and DVB compatible with all standards and versions.
